Farmington Hosts Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo

Event hosted by Farmington Extended Care and Learning drew more than 350 people.

Over 350 people attended the Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo at Farmington High School on Saturday January 19th, 2013 hosted by Farmington Extended Care and Learning.  19 teams with over 100 children from Burlington, Farmington, Glastonbury and Harwington displayed their work from this season and participated in many fun theme and engineering based activities organized by the FIRST Robotics Team from Farmington High School.

The Jr.FLL is a national program which supports STEM studies for elementary students.  This season, teams were given a challenge called Super Seniors.  They researched how technology has changed over the last 60 years by interviewing a senior partner.  Their senior partners were grandparents, neighbors and residents of Village Gate Community who met with the teams and answered their many questions.  They designed and built creative LEGO models of technology changes and solutions to problems seniors face today.  Area educators and parents served as reviewers and interviewed team members.  These reviewers assigned each team an award based on their work.

The FIRST Robotics Competition Team 178, the Enforcers, from Farmington High School is strong supporter of the Jr.FLL program.  The Enforcers served as mentors to teams during the season and ran their DreamFIRST program at the event.  Dream FIRST's objective is to cultivate children's interest in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields from a very young age.
