As part of St. Patrick Church’s 90th year celebrations, the parish is hosting a Mardi Gras party Feb. 18.
The parish of the Roman Catholic Church on Main Street in Farmington is inviting everyone to join with them in celebrating the church’s 90th anniversary and its first-ever Mardi Gras.
“This will be our first one,” said Maureen Sposato, a member of the St. Patrick Parish Council. “We have a new pastor, Father Thomas Barry, and it’s his idea. He wants everyone to be included.”
The celebration, complete with purple, gold and green Mardi Gras beads, will be hosted at Farmington Gardens. There will be activities for children, a buffet supper, a jazz band and dancing.
Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, Sposato explained, and is normally held on Tuesday.
“Because on Ash Wednesday we fast, we give up things for Lent, so traditional Mardi Gras is an opportunity to have a lot of fun before people started fasting for Lent, which leads up to Easter.”
St. Patrick will celebrate Mardi Gras on a Saturday night to avoid interfering with a school night.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children over age 3. Children 3 years and younger are free. Tickets are available after masses or by calling St. Patrick at 860-677-2639.
The parish, itself about 150 years old, has been meeting at the building on Main Street in Farmington for 90 years. The year’s celebrations have included a wine tasting and a golf party and will culminate in the spring with a rededication of the building by the archbishop.
“We want people to know about our anniversary and we want them to celebrate with us,” Sposato said.
Ticket sales end Feb. 12.
