Eat Naples Pizza Today to Help Hogan-Lynch PMC Team Raise $20,000

Here's what's going on today in Farmington.

Hello, Farmington!

Today marks the first of a new feature called, well, "Today in..." In it we'll feature snippets of the happenings of the day, share interesting stories in town, facts of the day and other information we'd like you to know.

While we'd love to tell you everything you should know in one day, remember Rome wasn't built in a day, so we'll do our best to give you the key highlights.  And, as always, if there's something we don't mention, it's still important to us that you can share that information with our readers.

Please utilize the comments under this post, our blogging platform, Boards and calendar to tell us other information you want people to know about your town.

For now, here's what's going on Tuesday in Farmington:

Eat Pizza, Chomp Out Cancer: Naples Pizza makes popular thin-crust pizza that many in town enjoy and that sports teams and other local organizations often order for events. Today, if you buy food at Naples, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pan Mass Challenge.  Jennifer Hogan, Brigit Hogan and Bonny Lynch have formed a team for the nearly 200-mile race, which donates all of the funds raised to The Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The fundraiser lasts all day and patrons can also enter for a chance to win a pair of Red Sox Tickets and other raffle prizes. The race is Aug. 3 and 4 and spans across Massachusetts. In an press release, Jennifer said it is the "largest sporting event fundraiser in the world" and the funds raised "support cancer research and treatment." The Pan Mass Challenge total goal is to raise $38 million and the Farmington team is looking to raise $20,000 of that.  The team is getting close and needs about $2,000. If you can't attend, you can still donate at www.pmc.org and look up their team.

Republicans Endorse Municipal Slate: The Republican Town Committee has endorsed its slate of municipal candidates for the fall election, including Nancy Nickerson for Town Council chairperson. But there was one twist after incumbent Charles Keniston learned the candidate screening committee did not endorse him for another go at a Second District council seat. He was not one of the two candidates with the most caucus votes either for the position. While he said that he won't contest that race, he instead announced plans to primary for the Town Council chairman seat. In order to do that, he would have to file paperwork with Town Clerk Paula Ray, so it's not official at this time.

Democratic Caucus Tuesday: Now it's the Democratic Town Committee's turn to select their candidates for various municipal seats. The Democrats will hold their caucus at the Farmington Community/Senior Center on Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. All registered Democrats can vote at the Democratic caucus.

Free Blood Pressure Screening: The Farmington Valley VNA is offering the screenings at the Farmington Senior Center (321 New Britain Ave., Unionville) on Tuesday, July 23 at 1 p.m.
