Town Budget Referendum Vote is Thursday, May 19

Get out and use your right, honor and privilege to vote.

Thursday, May 19 we head back to the polls to vote on the Town Council budget. After a motion was made at the Second Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 9 to restore the budget to its previous amount, the crowd of over 300 voted to pass the motion.

You'll see the signs, you'll receive the literature (for and opposing) regarding the town's proposal. You're likely to get a phone call asking for a commitment, either way. The most important thing you can do in this process is show that you value your right, honor and privilege of voting. All polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. There are no excuses not to vote.

If you do not think you can make it to the polls on Thursday, contact Paula Ray, Town Clerk, to obtain an absentee ballot - rayp@farmington-ct.org, or call the Farmington Town Hall.

You can register to vote up until Wednesday, May 18 but all property owners may vote, even if they are not registered. There has been a great deal said and written by both proponents and the opposition. In this blogger's opinion, a YES vote is a vote for town services, education and the children.

That's right, I wrote it.

When you say "YES," you're saying "YES" to education, "YES" to the children of Farmington. As parents and grandparents, we find ourselves in many situations when the right response is often "No." That's not the case on Thursday, May 19. On Thursday, we should say "Yes."

We can talk "Farmington Taxpayer Association" or "Farmington Future" but the real future of Farmington, surrounding towns, the State of Connecticut and the nation in general lies with our children. Surf the  Patch for the outstanding reporting it has provided during the budget season. You will find the Board of Education's budget along with Public Safety and other town services. It is the duty of town residents to educate themselves with the plethora of accurate and factual information available to them. The Patch is an excellent place to find it.

Voting on Thursday, May 19 shows you feel fortunate to live in a community with outstanding ratings for low spending on services and education. It also shows that you value the educational system, the hard work, mission and vision of teachers, administrators and our elected officials. Voting on Thursday means you recognize you have a voice, an opinion and you don't take that lightly.

Help Farmington remain a top-tier center of excellence in education. Help Farmington remain a town dedicated to the consistent quality of life of its residents. Help Farmington to help you.

Vote yes on Thursday, May 19.
