Nutmeg State Orchid Society Monthly Meeting

Nutmeg State Orchid Society Monthly Meeting, Monday, January 7th, 7-9 pm.

Location:  Lion's Club - Camp Happy Hill, 87 W. Avon Rd, Unionville.

Our distinguished speaker is Ron Burch, of Gardens at Post Hill.  Ron's topic is "New Directions in Hybridization".

Ron has been fascinated by orchids, particularly terrestrial orchids since his childhood growing up on the Coastal Plain of South Carolina where it was not uncommon to see tens of thousands orchids blooming at one time, from early Spring through mid-Summer.  Upon moving to Connecticut in 1995 and seeing his first wild lady slipper orchid (they don’t occur in South Carolina's hot climate) he became hooked on temperate terrestrial lady slippers and now has several thousand of them growing in his garden in Morris, including more than 100 different Cypripedium hybrids and 17 Cypripedium species.  Ron works as a researcher in the pharmaceutical industry (to pay the mortgage and to avoid a second mortgage as a result of not being able to avoid purchasing so many orchids!) and he has a mail order orchid lady slipper nursery, Gardens at Post Hill, which offers Cypripedium in early Spring and Fall, and tropical Phragmipedium sporadically year-round.
