It was a special night for Union School families at Barnes & Noble and Dish ‘n Dat at the The Shoppes at Farmington Valley on December 3, 2012. Barnes & Noble held a Book Fair for Union school at the store, with 20% of book sales going to the school starting Monday night and lasting all week. Parent volunteers wrapped presents in the store. Artwork from kindergarten, first and second graders is displayed in the café. Third and fourth grade strings students performed in the café for all of Barnes & Noble’s patrons. For story time, Principal Lynn Katz read Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems and others in the children’s section to an audience that hung on her every word. The Barnes & Noble staff pulled the books from teachers’ wish lists for their classrooms and made them easily accessible to shoppers. The store was filled with music, books sales, and happy children. A few doors down at Dish ‘n Dat the restaurant donated 20% of the check when diners mentioned Union School Night. All in all, at least $600 was raised thanks to the generosity of Barnes & Noble and Dish ‘n Dat. The Parent Teacher Organization is focusing its 2012-2013 giving on building superb classroom libraries, and these funds will go toward that goal.
