Grand Concours Vocal Competition 2014 Winner, Tessa Romano a Farmington High School graduate

Tessa Romano, a graduate of Farmington High School recently won first prize in the Grand Concours Vocal Competition.

 Mezzosoprano Tessa Romano is a 2013 graduate from Princeton University where she concentrated in Italian language, literature & history, and vocal performance. In September 2013, she began her studies as a Master of Music candidate in Vocal Performance at the University of Michigan. Ms. Romano’s singing career began at a young age: at 13, she played the role of Amahl in Syracuse Open Hand Theatre’s production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. At 14, Romano was a guest soloist for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra’s 2005 Winter Pops Concert. Romano was a soloist in Syracuse Friends of Music’s 2006 “Bach Plus” Concert at the age of 15. By 20, she was on the Hartford, Connecticut stage as a guest soloist for Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Winter POPS! Concert. On Princeton Chapel Choir’s tour of Eastern Europe in 2011, Romano was a featured soloist in such renowned venues as the Stephansdom. Recently, Tessa Romano has been a featured performer in repertoire that book-ends the classical music genre: last year, Tessa debuted the role of Jenna aside soprano Susan Narucki in the premiere of Lear on the Second Floor written by renowned contemporary composer Anthony Davis for Princeton University’s first One Act Opera Festival.  Upon graduation from Princeton University, Romano received the Isidore and Helen Sacks Memorial Prize for excellence in musical performance. She currently studies under Freda Herseth, Professor and Chair of Voice at the University of Michigan. Recently Tessa played the Third Sprit in University of Michigan’s production of The Magic Flute

While at Farmington High School, Tessa was very involved in the music program. As a vocalist, she was a member of the Chamber Singers and Madrigal Singers. Also a French horn player, she was a member of the Wind Ensemble. Tessa was awarded as a CT All-State Musician as well as the American Choral Director’s award. She played the role of Mother in the FHS production of Amahl and the Night Visitors.
