Picture this.
The snow has melted and it's a warm spring day. You get a bite to eat at Avon Village Marketplace or 51 East, traverse the Route 44 crosswalk and stroll down Route 10 (Simsbury Road) from the corner of the state highway to Sperry Park for an Avon Little League game.
That wouldn't be safe without a sidewalk, but that pedestrian trip soon will be as the Village Streetscape Project nears completion.
The Route 10 sidewalks should be ready in the spring. But first the contractor needs to install the final segment of granite and Avon Public Works crews also will have to complete "site restoration," according to Steve Bartha, assistant town manager.
Work on the sidewalks halted on Dec. 13 "due to the closure of the asphalt plants," Avon Public Works Director Bruce Williams said.
"We will resume in early spring once the frost comes out of the ground," Williams said. "There’s approximately 700 linear feet of granite along with the installation several catch basin tops left. Also remaining is a little final grading and seeding. I’m estimating less than two weeks work to complete everything."
While AT&T put in a new utility pole along the sidewalk path, the telephone company, Comcast and FiberTech have to "relocate their utilities," Williams said. Connecticut Light & Power has already done so.
"AT&T is the utility that is responsible for the coordination of all the utilities since they own the pole," Williams said.
