Farmington Residents, Businesses Decorate Town
Many sponsor kissing balls, wreaths to make Farmington festive.
For the second year, Farmington has been decked in festive Evergreen and red ribbons, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, individuals and organizations that gave donations to sponsor the "kissing balls" and wreaths hanging in Unionville center and on the Vincent DiPietro Memorial Bridge.
The arrangements are organized by the Farmington Economic Development Commission, which put out the call to local groups who might be interested in sponsoring as a way to show civic pride and by the Farmington Garden Club.
The kissing balls are part of an 18th century British tradition that stated an eligible young lady who received a kiss on the cheek under the kissing ball would soon be married. The tradition is no longer followed but remains a festive symbol of times past. Kissing balls line the streets in Unionville center and along the bridge as drivers enter Farmington center.
