West District Schoolhouse Open for Tours July 31

See the beginnings of Farmington education, with spelling bees, slate boards and refreshments.

Though the West District Schoolhouse has been closed for repairs most of this summer, locals will have a chance to visit and learn about the town’s educational beginnings Sunday, July 31 from 1-2:30 p.m.

The schoolhouse, which dates back to the 1700s and is on the State Register of Historic Places, was one of the town’s first schoolhouses.

“The town was divided into 12 districts,” explained docent Judith Cowell. “Farmington was on the forefront for high quality education and very particular who they hired for school masters.”

Cowell, a member of the Farmington Historical Society, will offer tours of the one-room schoolhouse Sunday. Refreshments will be provided and children can participate in a spelling bee and a math quiz, taken on slate boards. Cowell will also discuss the history of the schoolhouse, what school was like and the development of education in Farmington.

The schoolhouse is at the corner of Coppermine and Red Oak Hill roads.
