Ebooks — Fast and Free from the Library

Farmington Library offers new technology to keep you reading.

You can relax with an ebook this long weekend at no cost, thanks to the library’s recent acquisition of lending Nook ebook devices and an extensive ebook collection.

The Farmington Library offers 24/7 access to a lending collection of downloadable ebooks through a regional cooperative, Library Connection’s Overdrive, which you can read through your own ereader or computer.

Recently the library also acquired Nook ebook readers that Farmington residents can borrow.

Funded by the Friends of the Farmington Library, the Main Library has 10 Nook Color devices for Farmington residents with plans to purchase more for the Barney and Main Libraries in June.

Hal Bright, Head of Information Services at the library reported that “all 10 have circulated. People are looking at them for whether they are going to purchase a Nook or not. I anticipate heavy demand in the summer.”

If you don't know what to do with a Nook, you're not alone, but there is help.

“We have had two Nook classes so far with 3-12 people attending and we have more classes scheduled on Tuesday, June 14 at 10 a.m., Wednesday June, 29 at 2 p.m. and Thursday, July 14 at 7 p.m.,” he added.

Overdrive service allows borrowing of ebooks to your reader device or PC.

“People should go to http://www.farmingtonlibraries.or , click on the Download Ebooks/Audiobooks icon, log in with a library barcode, search for and check out the title, download the required software, download the title and transfer it to their device. Also, smartphone/iPad users can go and get the Overdrive app. People can call and ask for me if they need assistance downloading ebooks on to their various devices from the library's Overdrive website,” Bright explained.

“We are always looking to add titles that Farmington/Unionville residents want us to own, even in the Ebooks/e-audiobooks section. Library card holders may email us at flref@farmingtonlibraries.org any purchase suggestions they may have for us,” he said.
