Farmington Students and Historic Garden To Be Featured at Connecticut Flower and Garden Show

Looking for inspiration? Visit Farmington’s displays at “what promises to be our most spectacular show ever,” the 30th Annual Connecticut Flower & Garden Show Thursday, Feb. 24 through Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Connecticut Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Capture the Magic.”

Garments created by four fashion design students at Sanford Brown College – Farmington will be featured as part of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut’s Advanced Standard Flower Show, featuring more than 12,000 square feet of design and horticulture competition and over 250 judged entries from around the state.

The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut selected four finalists to display their work during the annual four-day event through a sketch contest held at Sanford-Brown College in October.

“Brittany King, David Molina, Kiesha Schiavo, and Jessica Ventura have been working tirelessly since then to bring their ideas to life, under guidance from fashion instructor Shoran Graham. Instructors Tina McKim and Jennifer Stern-Hasemann also helped mentor the students. The fabric, color, and silhouette of each fashion design will become inspiration for four floral designers representing the Federated Garden Clubs. The resulting floral designs and student-made garments will be on display at an entrance to the Flower Show. Last year, 30,000 attendees walked through the door. We are excited for Sanford-Brown College to play a role in the 2011 Connecticut Flower & Garden Show,” said Jennifer Sauer, Department Chair of Fashion Design and Merchandising.  “We embrace every opportunity to not only showcase the amazing talent of our design students but also to help launch their careers.” 

 The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut will also offer over 80 hours of seminars and demonstrations.

Farmington’s Hill-Stead Museum will be participating in the Connecticut Historic Gardens exhibit, Booth 513. Connecticut's Historic Garden are 14 distinctive historic sites and gardens, all within Connecticut's borders.

The show includes hundreds of displays of flowers, plants, herbs, bulbs, seeds, gardening books and garden equipment.

UConn Extension Master Gardeners will also be on hand to test your soil, if you can find it under all the snow.

Show hours are Thursday, Feb. 24 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 25 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 26 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 27 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
