Farmington Business Buzz: TPZ to Hear Applications for New Shop and Gallery, Building Expansions and More

The business landscape in a town is always changing, so when there is an update, we want you to know about it.

Farmington Business Buzz is a new feature that will highlight the latest Farmington business news.

The Town Plan and Zoning Commission is scheduled to meet on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Council Chambers. Here's some background on some of the applications.

  • Rose Brothers, a contractor that does house painting and other work on houses, has reapplied to build a garage building on its 1730 New Britain Avenue property, town planning officials said. The company previously got approval for the project, but never built the garage and the permit has expired, according to Town Planner Jeffrey Ollendorf.
  • Unionville resident Brian Lyman, of VAG, LLC, has applied to the TPZ Commission for a special permit "for shop, gallery and business office uses" at 25 Mill St. The commission approved an application for "residential use conversion" in 2004 for the building on that property, a vacant former commercial building, according to Ollendorf. However, contaminated soil beneath the building prevented the owner from following through with that project, he said. Lyman has not announced specific businesses that are looking to move in, but Ollendorf confirmed that he is looking to make it a shop and gallery space. The TPZ Commission is scheduled to discuss it on Monday.
  • Patrick Downend has applied for permission to remove an "existing storage garage and construct" a "new office and apartment building" at 767-771 Farmington Ave. and 2 High St., according to the agenda. If approved, the "multi-use building" would have "six residential apartments" and around 1,500 square feet of office space," Ollendorf said. The building itself is less than 7,000 square feet and would "be part of the existing Brickwalk Shop complex" on the corner of Route 4 and High Street.
  • JDS Development will informally discuss a proposal with the TPZ Commission on Tuesday to redevelop 784-788 Farmington Ave., but Ollendorf said that the developer has not announced his plans yet.
  • Fortunato Contracting has applied to build a "warehouse addition to the existing Stanley Access Technologies building on Route 6," according to Ollendorf. The TPZ Commission held a public hearing for the application on June 10, but no neighbors spoke. It's likely the commission will vote on the application Monday.
