Pepe's Pizza to Open New Location in West Hartford

The famous New Haven restaurant has chosen a site in Elmwood for its entree into the local restaurant scene.

A portion of the space currently occupied by the Puppy Center in West Hartford's Elmwood will one day soon be home to a Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.

"Pepe's – the famous, very iconic New Haven Pizza Parlor has selected Elmwood as its newest location," said Director of Community Development Rob Rowlson.

"We are thrilled. This will be a terrific addition to the community of food," Rowlson said.

At its Nov. 27 meeting, the West Hartford Town Council will receive an application filed on behalf of Pepe's for modification of the shopping center located at 1126-1148 New Britain Ave. in Elmwood.

According to that application, Pepe's will take over approximately 3,200 square feet of space currently occupied by the Puppy Center, and convert it to a restaurant with 72 seats.

Rowlson said that the Puppy Center is contracting, but will remain in a portion of its current location in the shopping center. Pepe's will have the end cap spot, he said.

The shopping center is a special development district, and the conversion from retail to restaurant space affects parking requirements and requires approval by the Town Council following a public hearing. According to the application, ample parking is available at the site.

Rowlson does not yet know when Pepe's plans to open or the terms of the lease, but is excited about the prospective opening of the full-size pizzeria.

Pepe's currently has five Connecticut locations, the closest of which is in Manchester.

"What a great addition to Elmwood," he said.
