Cub Scouts Take to the Track

Scouts and siblings race at annual Pack 170 event.

Pack 170 held its Pinewood Derby Friday night at West District School. Proud Cub Scouts brought their cars to be weighed and registered before competing in dozens of trials.

The cars, fashioned from a block of wood, four wheels and nails, featured Sponge Bob, little Lego people and a wolf. Some had sleek paint jobs, flames or racing stripes.

The cars flew down a massive track built by Cubmaster Kevin Sweet. Webelos' Chris Coyle, an engineer, designed the track's electronic timer system, which automatically calculated each car's speed and placement.

The Scouts' race was followed by a fundraiser race, open to all. That race was composed mainly of Scouts' sisters and younger siblings.
