Flooding Closes Town Roads

National Weather Service says evacuations may be necessary in Avon and Simsbury.

Flooding has closed several roads around town, all in the usual places.

Town Farm Road at Devonwood Road is closed this morning, but police said they expected Route 4 in the area of Town Farm Road to be closed within hours. Johnson Road at Hyde Road is closed, as is Morea at Old Pond Road. Meadow Road is closed from Red Oak Hill to Garden Street.

In addition, the commuter parking lot on Route 4 and Town Farm Road is flooded and closed. Police are advising drivers to seek alternate routes. State Police Spokesman Lt. Paul Vance advised drivers not to try to drive through the water and Farmington Police warned that anyone seen removing barricades to pass through closed roads would be arrested.

Gov. Dannel Malloy activated the Emergency Operations Center just before 8 a.m. to monitor flooding and offer assistance to towns dealing with flooding conditions.

The flooding comes after a steady rain dropped 2 to 3 inches, combined with melting snow added to the rising Farmington River.

The National Weather Service reissued a flood warning Monday morning, after the Farmington River reached 15.4 feet at Unionville. Flood stage is at 12 feet.

The flood warning is in effect until Tuesday evening.

In addition, the warning predicted flooding in Simsbury, where the river is predicted to reach 15.8 feet by Tuesday morning. If it reached 16 feet, the service said, evacuations could be necessary from various roads in Avon and Simsbury, including Riverside Road in Simsbury. Low-lying sections of Bloomfield and East Granby could be affected as well.

The flooding in Farmington is expected to be short-lived, with rain or possible snow subsiding early and waters predicted to retreat by Monday afternoon.
