Former UConn President to Step in Again to Lead

Will serve as interim vice president until replacement for Laurencin can be found.

Former University of Connecticut President Philip E. Austin, who recently joked that he would prefer not to again oversee the school, will serve as interim vice president for health affairs at UConn Health Center until a replacement can be found for Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, according to an article on UConn Health Center Today.

Austin served as UConn president from 1996 to 2006 and most recently served as interim president until UConn President Susan Herbst took over in June.

According to the article, Dr. Bruce T. Liang, director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center, will serve as interim dean of the UConn School of Medicine.

A national search is being conducted to fill the position, which encompasses both roles.

In the meantime, the article says, Herbst will conduct “town hall” meetings at the health center to get feedback from the faculty, staff and students.
