From Wooden Fish to Earthstock, Celebrate Earth Day

Farmington and the surrounding communities have lots planned for the 40th anniversary.

Sunday marks the 40th year of Earth Day, which began as a way to raise awareness about the environment and continues to inspire people to think green.

Puppy Adoption Event in Avon

Puppies, puppies, puppies! Simsbury's Boot n' Kit Canine Rescue is hosting a dog adoption event at Progressive Animal Wellness in Avon at 2 p.m. to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday. You must be pre-approved to adopt to go home with a puppy that day.

Flamig Farm in West Simsbury

This one's on Saturday. Celebrate Earth Day at Flamig Farm with their special event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 21. Activities will feature a free petting zoo, tractor hayrides, pony rides, sheep shearing, environmental tours, vendors, arts & crafts, special exhibits, live music and more!

Tunxis Community College

in Farmington will be hosting the Earthstock celebration but not until next weekend. The event has been postponed from its original date to Sunday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Earthstock will feature eco-minded vendors and exhibitors, music, food and family activities. Some of the fun activities include face painting, hair extensions, massage therapy, greetings by costumed characters, and rides on the Roaming Railroad electric engine train. Vendors will have many things for sale like candles, jewelry, handmade soap, handbags, crafts, art, honey and more. A portion of proceeds from these sales will be donated to the Tunxis Community College Sustainable Energy Fund.

The Children's Museum

On Sunday, in West Hartford will be holding a special environmental theme for their usual Family Science Sunday series from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The green lineup will include a fun craft activity of painting a flower pot to take home complete with soil and seeds, learning about endangered species with the Turtle Conservation Project, seeing how different alternate energy methods work, making recycled paper and much more. All of the activities are free with museum admission which is $13.75 for adults, kids 2-12 and seniors $12.75; under 2 free.

REI in Blue Back Square

The Farmington River Watershed Association and have partnered together for the Fabulous Fish for the Farmington silent auction and gala. It will be held at REI West Hartford in Blue Back Square on Earth Day, April 22, from 7-9 pm. There will be food served, music, and auctioning of life size wooden fish made by various artists (including Farmington Girl Scouts) with proceeds benefiting the Farmington River Watershed.
