Green Monster eCycling Fundraiser Saturday at New Horizons

Drop off unwanted electronics and make a donation to New Horizons' capital fund.

If you’ve got old computers, outdated cameras or other unwanted electronics at your house, this is the fundraiser for you. Green Monster, a West Hartford electronics recycling company, will hold a drop-off day at New Horizons Village in Unionville Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It will basically work like a hazardous waste drop-off, said Linda Iovanna, New Horizons director of development and fundraising.

“We’re hopefully just going to have a lot of traffic come through here. We’ll have receptacles set up and as cars come through they’ll give their donation and just drop their items off,” Iovanna explained. Volunteers will help unload the items.

The fundraiser benefits New Horizons’ capital fund. Suggested donation is $5 - $10 for most items, including electronics, small appliances and cables. Televisions, which Green Monster has to pay to dispose of, are a required $12. Batteries and ink cartridges are free.

Green Monster offers guaranteed data destruction – an important consideration in getting rid of old computers, Iovanna said. The company also reuses as much of what’s dropped off as possible, then disposes of the rest in an environmentally responsible manner.

New Horizons, a private nonprofit providing barrier free living for adults with severe physical disabilities, is looking to raise funds to upgrade its 20-year-old buildings by installing energy efficient windows in residents’ apartments.

And it’s also a good way to connect with the community, Iovanna said.

“It’s a great way to get people here to see New Horizons and to let the public know who we are – that there’s a nonprofit in their backyard,” she said.

New Horizons Village is at 37 Bliss Road in Unionville. For more information, call 860-675-4369.
