Hundreds of These Were Left in the Farmington River Watershed

Environmental advocates have been working to restore the Farmington River to its natural state.

The Connecticut River's longest tributary, the Farmington River, made the watershed region an ideal location for many small manufacturers and with the manufacturing boom in the 19th century came hundreds of future environmental obstacles.

Dams.

There are 409 dams in the Farmington River Watershed, according to the Farmington River Watershed Association website. Make that 408 once you have subtracted the former Spoonville Dam in Tariffville and East Granby which was removed in July 2012.

Many of the dams are small and are located along the many small tributaries feeding into the Farmington River. The largest remaining dams on the East Branch of the Farmington River, which runs through the Farmington Valley, are the Saville Dam at the Barkhamstead Reservoir, the Rainbow Dam in Windsor and the Collinsville Dam.
