Community Corner

August Art Exhibit at the Farmington Main Libary

“Jars that runneth over of which I cherish.”  The title of the show truly sums up how Sarah May feels about the pieces in the Main Library's AUgust show in the Community Room.  The "jar series" is Sarah May's self-portrait of the past year of ideas and reflections—a year of emotional, personal, and artistic growth that is documented in these works.

The idea for the series emerged from a song entitled “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri. From the initial visualization of a jar filled with broken hearts Sarah then began thinking of bits and pieces she would like to keep in a jar allowing them to remain unaltered.  Items included snapshots of memories, sounds, emotions, moments, and essentials that identify who she is.  She visualized, and continued to imagine, opening the jars 10, 20, 30 years from now to be flooded with memoirs and warmth.

The first jar created was the “make art” jar; it seemed only appropriate, and her enthusiasm for the series grew as she challenged her 7th grade students to attempt the same concept of putting either an actual object of importance or a figurative idea into a jar.

The series evolved from single prints, to multiple jars per print, onto collages made with tissue paper.  “Choosing the color combinations is challenging and exciting.  I love how each collage is a little bit different as well as the differentiation from a print made only with ink.” Sarah also says, “The process of creating a linoleum print thrills me each time I make a new one.” The numerous steps are addicting and exciting but her favorite stage is carving.

Sarah C. May is a printmaker and a public school art teacher. She received her undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and completed her teaching certification at Central Connecticut State University.  She also has a Master’s degree from CCSU in Art Education with a focus on Printmaking.

Her work centers on linoleum carving and printing, often combined with collage.  Her current series of works, on display for the month of August at the Farmington Main Library, is of a variety of jars filled with concepts and figurative ideas.  These jars reflect who she is.

The prints are available for sale through her etsy shop www.block21prints.etsy.com  In addition to Block21prints, she sells other whimsical block printed images carved and printed on shirts and paper— and so much more—in her other etsy shop: www.monsterinthecloset.etsy.com

This exhibit will be on display until August 29, 2013.  Please contact the library to find when the room is available for viewing.
