Director's College Event: Presenting Alfred Hitchcock

On Wednesday, January 22, the Farmington Libraries will host a lecture on Alfred Hitchcock with Sidney Gottlieb, Professor of Media Studies at Sacred Heart University. This event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington Main Library at 6 Monteith Drive.

Alfred Hitchcock created over fifty films during his lifetime, many of which are considered classics. What sets an Alfred Hitchcock film apart from all the rest? Is it just camera angles, plot twists, and cool blonde heroines, or is there more to the lore that truly makes a Hitchcock film just that? Professor Sidney Gottlieb of Sacred Heart University will scratch the surface of Hitchcock’s work, answer the question of what it means for a film to be Hitchcockian, and explore why we are still so fascinated by this director and his iconic films some thirty years later.

Sidney Gottlieb has been teaching at Sacred Heart University since 1976. He is the longtime editor of two scholarly journals, the Hitchcock Annual and the George Herbert Journal. His edited books include Hitchcock on Hitchcock (Univ. of California Press), Framing Hitchcock (Wayne State University Press; coedited with Chris Brookhouse), Hitchcock: Interviews (Univ. of Missouri Press), and Roberto Rossellini's Rome Open City (Cambridge Univ. Press). He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

To coincide with this lecture, the Farmington Main Library will devote its Monday Night Movie Series to a variety of Hitchcock films. Please note the following schedule: January 6 - Hitchcock [2012], January 13 - Psycho [1960], January 27 - The Man Who Knew Too Much [1956], February 3 - North by Northwest [1959], February 10 - Vertigo [1958], February 24 - Rear Window [1954].

The Director’s College is an ongoing series at the Farmington Libraries, the aim of which is to present interesting and intellectual programs for our community. These events strive to cover a wide range of areas including, but not limited to, professorial lectures, performing arts events, travelogues, and music series.
