Professor-Led Book Discussion Group “Sula” by Toni Morrison

On Thursday, December 5, the Farmington Libraries welcome Professor Nels Highberg as he leads our classic book discussion on the novel, “Sula,” by Toni Morrison. This event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Library at 6 Monteith Drive.

“Sula,” first published in 1973, is the story of two women—friends since childhood, separated in young adulthood, and reunited as grown women. Both women must suffer the consequences of the choices they have made in their very different lives; both must decide if they can afford to harbor the love they have for each other; and both combine to create an unforgettable rendering of what it means and costs to exist and survive as a black woman in America.  The book is heralded as an honest look at the power of friendship amid a backdrop of family, love, race, and the human condition. Toni Morrison is the 1993 winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.

Nels Highberg holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Hartford.

Copies of the book will be available at the main library. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Farmington Libraries.
