Introducing the Democratic Candidates for Board of Education

This is the first in a series of posts introducing the Democratic Candidates for municipal office in 2013.  I'm proud to begin by introducing Paula O'Brien, Billl Beckert and Ellen Siuta, the Democratic candidates for the Board of Education.

Our schools and our town have been fortunate to have Paula, Bill and Ellen serving on the Farmington Board of Education.  Their dedication, knowledge and collaborative natures have been instrumental as the district continues to remain a leader in public education.  FHS has a top 5 ranking in CT by U.S. News & World Report and the Washington Post, has a 98% graduation rate and 96% of Farmington graduates continue on to higher education.

Paula, Bill and Ellen are committed to preserving the quality of education for which our town has always been respected while also implementing cost-containment initiatives, and that is what they've done while serving on the Board of Education.  For example, they supported energy-savings performance contracts, initiated technology solutions to reduce computer costs, and negotiated employee contracts with consumer directed health plans that will result in significant savings for our district.

Currently, Farmington Public Schools are facing the challenges of state and federal mandates, core-curriculum program reviews and introducing the new Smarter Balance Assessments that will replace CMT’s and CAPT’s.  Now more than ever we need capable individuals who have the background, knowledge and experience to continue meeting these demands for the residents of Farmington who value excellence in education.

I hope you will join me in re-electing Paula O’Brien, Bill Beckert and Ellen Siuta--your experienced Farmington Democratic Board of Education team.
