Farmington Girl, 13, Sells $60,000 Worth of Lemonade to Benefit Cancer Research

Sets goal of raising $100,000 for children's hospital

Now that’s a lot of lemonade!

Books are wonderful at any age, but for a child they can spur one’s imagination and lead to truly great acts, and that is what happened to Grace Bergin, 13, of Farmington.

Grace read the book “Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand” six years ago. The main character in that book begins selling lemonade to benefit childhood cancer research.

Well that book inspired Grace to do the same thing, the Hartford Courant reports. Grace also has family members who have suffered from cancer.

So six years ago she began selling lemonade for $1 a cup and in the first year she raised $226, the Hartford Courant reports.

But sales picked up briskly and between 2009-2013 she sold $27,000 worth of lemonade. One hundred percent of the proceeds are donated to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Whole Foods has donated the lemonade for free, while the cups have also been donated by an area business.

And she hasn’t rested on her laurels this year. Since April, Grace has sold an additional $37,000 worth of lemonade and received contributions from businesses for childhood cancer research, the Courant reports.

Grace has raised more than $62,000 and has set a personal goal of $100,000.
