Farmington Recognized with National Biking Award

Farmington received a BFC award at the Bronze level, which honors towns for encouraging bicycling.

As bike commuting rates have soared nationwide, the League of American Bicyclists has honored the Town of Farmington with a Bicycle Friendly Community Award.

Farmington received a BFC award at the Bronze level, which honors towns for their “commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies,” according to a May 15 press release from the BFC.

“This round of applications overwhelmingly confirms what we heard from local elected officials at the National Bike Summit this year — riding a bike embodies the quality-of-life aspirations of communities across the country,” league president Andy Clarke said in a statement. “We’re excited that the Town of Farmington has made the smart and vital investments to become a designated Bicycle Friendly Community.”

Nearly 40 million Americans biked to work in 2012, a 61 percent increase from 2000.

While more than 769 communities have applied for the five levels of the award — diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze — only 303 have been awarded thus far.
