The (Holiday) Weekend Guide 7/4-7/7 

Finally! The fourth of July is here. And a little red, white and blue means there's plenty to do all weekend long. We are kicking the weekend off a little earlier this week because of all the great celebrations going on!  Enjoy a night out with your little firecrackers or take part in one of the other great events this holiday weekend.  Lots of music, movies and of course fireworks.  Check out some of our faves in this guide but don’t forget to check the event calendar for a complete list of all the holiday weekend fun!

July 4th Ice Cream Social & Concert
The annual July 4th Ice Cream Social and Simsbury Community Band concert will be held on Thursday, July 4th at Simsbury Farms. Ice cream will be served starting at 6:00pm, and will cost $2 each, while supplies last. The Simsbury Community Band will kick off at 7:00pm, playing your favorite patriotic music. Bring the whole family and make a special evening of it! Any questions please contact the Simsbury Recreation Department at 860-658-3836.

Where:  Simsbury Farms, 100 Old Farms Road, Simsbury
When:  Thursday, July 4th, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Fee:  $2 for ice cream while supplies last

The Great American BOOM!
The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the 20th Annual Great American Boom at Stanley Quarter Park on Thursday, July 4, 2013 (rain date: July 5). This giant 4th of July celebration begins at 5:00 p.m. with the opening of several attractions and food vendors, followed by a concert starting at 6:00 PM by Latanya Farrell and the Bookman Styles Band and finally culminates with a spectacular fireworks display at approximately 9:15 p.m.  Check out the event listing for more details. 

Where:  Stanley Quarter Park, 451 Blake Road, New Britain
When:  Thursday, July 4th (Raindate – July 5th), 5:00 PM, fireworks at approximately 9:15 PM
Fee:  $5 wristband to enjoy some of the attractions or $15 for a family 4 pack

Friday

First Friday Ice Cream Festival
Did you know that July is National Ice Cream month?  Celebrate with the fam and head on down to the Imagine Nation Museum in Bristol with a variety of delicious hands-on activities and sweet treats. Take a behind the scenes tour of the nostalgic 1940’s Soda Fountain where you will learn the ins and outs of being a Soda Jerk, taste and learn about scrumptious ice cream from around the world, discover how ice cream is made, enter into the Popsicle lick off challenge, construct a yummy ice cream craft, and get your face painted.

Where:  Imagine Nation Museum , 1 Pleasant Street, Bristol
When:  Friday, July 5th, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Fee:  $7 per person

Fireworks at Lake Compounce
Haven’t seen fireworks yet?  Don’t worry Lake Compounce has you r back.  Watch the fireworks free with park admission.  Fireworks start at 10 PM but come early to enjoy the rides during the day. 

Where:  Lake Compounce, 186 Enterprise Drive, Bristol
When:  Friday, July 5th, 10 PM for fireworks
Fee:  FREE with regular park admission

Saturday

Kids Club Craft
Let your kids explore their creativity while you shop! Only $2 per child reserves 30 minutes for your creative kid. Sessions starting every half hour from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Please call ahead to pre-register so they have enough supplies.  Today's craft: Summer Games.

Where:  Michaels Avon and New Britain, 315 West Main Street, Avon or 600 Hartford Rd, New Britain
When:  Saturday, July 6th, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Fee:  $2 per child

Movies, Music and More!
Head on over to The Shoppes for some summer fun!  Every Saturday for the next 8 weeks they will feature a different movie.  All movies begin at sunset in the main parking area near the barn.  Come early for some pre-show entertainment from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Each night there will be something different from music to face painting to balloon artists and more.  This week’s movie is Hotel Transylvania (PG).

When:  Saturday, July 6th, 6:00 PM – pre show entertainment, movie starts at sunset
Fee:  FREE

Hill-Stead Farmer’s Market
It’s Opening Day at the Hill-Stead Farmers Market!  Beginning its fifth season, the Farmers Market hosts 25 Connecticut farmers and vendors each week, who offer an array of locally grown, fresh, and organic vegetables, fruits, dairy products, free-range eggs, naturally raised beef, veal, pork and lamb, Connecticut-landed seafood, baked goods, flowers, wool and Angora goat yarns, soaps and hand-made Italian ices. Come to shop the market, and stay to experience Hill-Stead’s enchanting grounds. Visit with neighbors and friends while being entertained by local musicians.
