Farmington Opens Cooling Center During Heat Wave

Temperatures expected to stay in the 90s all week.

In anticipation of this week's heat wave, the town of Farmington announced Monday morning it would open a cooling center and requested that residents check on elderly neighbors. 

The Community and Senior Center at 321 New Britain Ave. in Unionville will be open July 15-19 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents are welcome to take advantage of the air conditioning. At the center, residents will also find the town's seniors taking part in a variety of activities. A list is included below.

According to the National Weather Service, the high this week is expected to be 95 or 96 degrees each day until Friday, when a heavy rain is predicted to bring the temperature down to 94 degrees. Lows are predicted to stay around 71 degrees all week.

Games & Activities at the Senior Center
Art Group—Interested in joining other artists to work on own projects? Sign up on lounge table.
Canasta (Modern American Style) - Instruction available for this popular card game on Tuesdays, 10-12 Noon.
Chess Club —Bring a friend and drop by to play a game of chess on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 12-3 PM.
Friendly Folks—This group of friendly ladies likes to get together Fridays 10-12N to chat, knit, or crochet.
Pool Players—Mondays 10-12N Co-ed, Wednesdays 10-12N Men, Fridays 10-12N Ladies
Mah Jongg (American Style)—Played with 152 tiles, racks and a scoring card. Meets Wednesdays, 1-3 PM.
Mah Jongg (Filipino)—Played with 144 tiles, no jokers,16 tiles/hand. Players meet Thursdays 10 AM-12 Noon. 
Movies—Flyers to be posted for the monthly movies. 
Party Bridge—Enjoy playing bridge? Join this experienced* group on Tuesday afternoons, 1-3 PM 
Scrabble/Quiddler—Challenge and expand your word power with a game on Mondays 1-3 PM. 
Stained Glass—8 week fall classes will begin in September . Registration and $50 fee required.
Wii—Virtual games of bowling, tennis, baseball & golf. See why this is fun for all ages. Sign up in office.
Farmington River Wood Carvers—Enjoy wood carving. Instruction & materials provided. Mondays 10-12 Noon. 

Exercise Programs 
Tai Chi for Health—Tues. 10:30—11:30 AM. Low impact exercise. Healthful & harmonious movements tone & increase muscle flexibility. Improve fitness and balance. Exercises done standing.
Exercise with Lorie—Tuesdays 1:30-2:30 PM. Exercises focus on activities of daily living, muscle conditioning, stretching along with breathing and relaxation techniques. Program is done seated with some standing.
Qigong— Thursdays, 10:30-11:30 AM. Use movement to stimulate flow of chi, increase vitality and promote relaxation. Increase flow of blood to the various organs. Exercises done mainly seated.
Power & Fitness—Thursdays 1:30-2:30 PM. Move to the music for a mild cardio workout. Strengthen the major muscle groups using hand weights and stretch bands. Bring your water bottle.
Hula Hoop—Thursdays, 3:00-4:00 PM. Bring your own hoop and drop by for a fun get together.
Zumba Gold—Fridays, 10:30-11:30 AM. Enjoy the health benefits of dancing to Latin music. It’s a “Feel Happy” aerobic workout! Need appropriate footwear and bring water bottle.
