Obituary: John L. Walters, World War II Submarine Torpedoman

John L. Walters of Unionville worked in Farmington.

John L. Walters, of Unionville, husband of Helen Walters, died Tuesday, March 18, at the Apple Rehab in Plainville.

Born in Osceola, Iowa, he resided in Connecticut for more than 50 years. He was a submarine torpedoman hero of World War II, having served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Nautilus (168) and the USS Grouper (214).

Walters was a retired member of Teamsters Local 671, having been employed by Spector Freight System of Farmington for more than 24 years. He was an avid Horseman and President of CTRA.

He was a life member of The Central CT Submarine Chapter, a life member of the Farmington VFW Post #10361, a member of the Tunxis Senior Center of Unionville, a member of the American Legion Post #28 of Key West, Fla., and a member of AARP Chapter #1351 of Key West, Fla.

Besides his wife Helen, he leaves a son Robert and his wife Nancy of Windsor Locks; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Gerry Morin of Van Buren, Maine; Marjorie Whitman Burkamp and Kurt Burkamp of Suffield; and Mary Ellen (Charlie) Walters of Windsor Locks; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two step-sons, William and Mark Kulas, two step granddaughters, five step great grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Dumas of Port Charlotte, Fla.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the faculty of Apple Rehab of Plainville for the special care they gave.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville

Burial: Following the funeral service. Burial with full military honors at Riverside Cemetery, Farmington.
