Tunxis Community College invites the community to National Depression Screening Day on October 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Administration Building main corridor for a free mental health check-up, with anonymous informational screenings for depression and other mood disorders.
Participants will take a private questionnaire that addresses mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and PTSD, and will have the opportunity to speak with screeners and a counselor. Referrals to community support services and educational information will be available.
The event is held annually in October to spread awareness of depression and related disorders, and to educate the public about symptoms and treatments. Of the 19 million Americans who experience depression each year, many develop their first symptoms just before or during college, according to the University of Michigan Depression Center.
