Crash Brings Down Pole, Live Wires Around Car With Kids Inside

Police say driver passed a car on New Britain Avenue in the rain, then lost control.

When police responded to the scene of a one-car crash Friday night, they found a mess of live wires and kids.

A car had slid off New Britain Avenue, near Wall Street at 6 p.m., colliding with a telephone pole and bringing down the pole, a transformer and live electrical wires around the car, according an arrest report.

Michael Daigle, 41, of 46 Union St., New Britain, was driving the car. Daigle’s 15-year-old son and the 6-year-old son of a friend were also in the car, police said.

Tunxis Hose Fire personnel were able to direct Daigle out of the wires and no one was hurt. The 6-year-old was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Hospital as a precaution.

According to police, an investigation showed Daigle had passed another car at high speeds in a no-passing zone on a curve in the rain and lost control of the car. On impact, the telephone pole was severed at the ground, bringing wires and a transformer onto New Britain Avenue and neighboring properties. Police shut down a portion of the road while CL&P crews repaired the damage.

Daigle was arrested and charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, reckless driving, driving with a suspended registration, failure to use an alcohol ignition interlock system and failure to have the 6-year-old in a proper child restraint system. He posted $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Oct. 4, 2011.
