Farmington Police Make Fifth Arrest in Fake Check-Cashing Ring

More arrests are expected.

A day after the fourth arrest in connection with a counterfeit check cashing ring, Farmington Police have made a fifth arrest.

Elizabeth Reyes, 21, of 846 Capitol Ave., Hartford, was arrested by warrant Friday at Sears. According to police, Reyes was also part of the check-cashing ring. She is accused of passing a fake check at a Farmington Bank branch in September 2012.

She was charged with first-degree forgery and third-degree larceny. Reyes posted $5,000 surety bond and was released for an April 16 court appearance.

The ring involves forged checks being cashed at Farmington Bank branches all over the area. The checks trace back to legitimate accounts, police said, but were not stolen.

“One of the people we arrested earlier said they were asked to cash checks by an unknown suspect in Hartford in exchange for money,” Porter said.

“We never figured out where they were coming from or how they were making the checks,” Porter said.

Police expect to make more arrests in the case.
