FHS Students Get Crash Course in Risks of Drunk Driving

Unionville and Burlington firefighters demonstrate an extrication at the scene of a mock crash.

Local fire departments staged an accident scene at the base of Farmington High School Friday morning as part of an alcohol awareness program that ran all day in the school.

and Lake Garda Fire Department performed a mock extrication on four FHS seniors who played the part of high school students who had been drinking on prom night and of their victims.

The audience, made up of the sophomore class, settled onto the hillside to watch the presentation, narrated by Tunxis Hose firefighter and EMT Kelly McCalmont.

The seniors waited as firefighters sliced off doors and a roof so they could pull the victims out and load them into waiting ambulances. LifeStar also landed for the drill.

Tunxis Hose has done the presentation annually for years, McCalmont said.

A 2007 graduate of Farmington High School, McCalmont said she remembered sitting on the hill as a student and watching the presentation.

"I hope they get something out of it," she said. "It is serious. The kids act like it's cool or funny but it's serious. People lose their lives."

After the presentation, students got a chance to check out the crash scene, talk to firefighters and see LifeStar up close.
