[Updated] Former Farmington Private School Teacher Charged With Sexual Assault

Joseph Prem Rajkumar, who taught at Miss Porter's School in Farmington until March 4, was charged with several counts of sexual assault, according to the Hartford Courant.

A former Miss Porter’s School science teacher was charged by Farmington police Monday with several counts of sexual assault.

Joseph Prem Rajkumar, 42, of 83 Main St., Apt. D2, Farmington, was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault - felonies - and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault - a misdemeanor, according to police.

The Hartford Courant reported that Rajkumar, who arrived at the Farmington private school in August 2009 from the Conserve School in Wisconsin, is facing the charges for allegedly having sexual contact with at least one student.

Under Connecticut law, it is illegal for teachers to have sexual contact with students.

Rajkumar left his employment with Miss Porter’s on March 4, according Siobhan Federici, the school's director of communications.

Federici declined to comment on the investigation, as well as what grades Rajkumar taught at the school and the age of the alleged victim.

Rajkumar was arraigned at Superior Court in Hartford Monday and was held on $500,000 bail.

The investigation, according to police, is ongoing. Police spokesperson Lt. Marshall Porter declined to comment further, as it is an open investigation.

Rajkumar's next court hearing is scheduled for April 9, according to the Connecticut Judicial website.
