Man Accused of Fleeing Police Arrested

Plainville man allegedly fled Bristol police, driving over lawns to avoid Farmington police before escaping on I-84.

Farmington police have arrested a man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase through town and nearly running over officers to escape.

According to police, Tobias Hussey, 30, of 33 Wilson St., Plainville, sped into town Jan. 20 to elude Bristol police, where Farmington police tried to stop him.

He drove down Plainville Avenue, through the meadows to Route 10, where he sped past Miss Porter’s School at a high rate of speed, Lt. Marshall Porter said. A resident saw the car, which didn’t have its headlights on, go down Tunxis Road. Officers set up stop sticks, which deflate tires, to try to stop him but he drove over sidewalks and snow banks and nearly hit officers, to avoid being stopped, Porter said.

Police followed Hussey onto Interstate 84, where police finally gave up pursuit because of dangerously high speeds. Porter said Hussey was speeding at about 100 miles per hour.

Police later found with him at his girlfriend’s house in Plainville and arrested him without incident.

Hussey was charged with two counts of attempted assault on a police officer, second-degree criminal mischief, engaging in pursuit, failure to have headlights lit, reckless driving and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Hussey was held on $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court Jan. 24, 2012. According to police, Hussey has an extensive criminal history of similar incidents, including a conviction for negligent homicide with a motor vehicle in 2006.

"Everytime we come in contact with him, he takes off at high rates of speed," Porter said. "He's already killed someone."
