Police and fire officials say that a 59-year-old man apparently suffered a medical emergency while swimming at the West Hartford pool.

A 59-year-old West Hartford man who suffered a medical emergency while swimming laps at a West Hartford pool Friday night has died, police said.

According to Sgt. Chris Chappell of the West Hartford Police, the man, whose name has not been released, came up for a breath and then went to the bottom of the pool at Cornerstone Aquatics Center.

Chappell said that the man was under water for less than 10 seconds before being pulled out by a lifeguard.

According to police, the man was unconscious when pulled from the water. Three lifeguards assisted in performing CPR, but the man could not be resuscitated.

West Hartford Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Winn said that the man was transported to UConn Health Center via AMR ambulance.

Profound condolences to this family. The lifeguard guard on duty, having gotten this man out of the pool in under 10 seconds, did an outstanding job. Likely there was some acute event such as a heart attack before this man went under the water. This does not sound like a death by drowning. The lifeguard on duty appeared to be extremely vigilant.

Very tight game by two super teams and played at least 80% on the Southbury half with 10 goalRead More attempts by Farmington. Their goalie was incredible. Unfortunately, close to the game's end, Farmington ran out of gas and they lost by 1 goal. Congratulations to Southington's soccer team for beating a great Farmington team!!!!!!!
