A 59-year-old West Hartford man who suffered a medical emergency while swimming laps at a West Hartford pool Friday night has died, police said.
According to Sgt. Chris Chappell of the West Hartford Police, the man, whose name has not been released, came up for a breath and then went to the bottom of the pool at Cornerstone Aquatics Center.
Chappell said that the man was under water for less than 10 seconds before being pulled out by a lifeguard.
According to police, the man was unconscious when pulled from the water. Three lifeguards assisted in performing CPR, but the man could not be resuscitated.
West Hartford Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Winn said that the man was transported to UConn Health Center via AMR ambulance.
Sgt. Chappell said that the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Both police and fire officials said it appeared that the man suffered a medical emergency while swimming.
The incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. and the pool was closed for the remainder of the evening.
