Life Star Airlifts 8-Year-Old After Route 6 Crash [Update, 6:37 p.m., Oct. 14]

Five others were also injured in the crash.

Both drivers in the Route 6 crash near Hyde Road on Monday and their passengers, including three children, were injured and taken to area hospitals. 

The female driver of the burgundy van carrying three children and an elderly female passenger in the four-door sedan were both rushed to UConn Health Center in Farmington to be treated for extensive, critical injuries, Farmington police Lt. Colin Ryan said in a press release after 6 p.m.

The elderly man driving the sedan was taken in an ambulance to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for serious injuries to his lower body and legs, Ryan said. 

An 8-year-old boy in the van with the female driver was airlifted via Life Star to Hartford Hospital and "the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time," Ryan said. 

The two other children, ages 4 and 6, that were in the van when the accident occurred were also hurt and taken in an ambulance to St. Francis to be treated for "unknown injuries," Ryan said. 

The North Central Accident Reconstruction Squad is investigating the crash. 

Police have not released the names and towns of residence of the injured parties because police are in the process of notifying all family members.

There is no update on their conditions at this time. 

Police ask any one who witnessed the accident to contact the department's routine line at  860-675-2400.  

Route 6 closed for several hours, but was already bustling with traffic again after it reopened just before 5 p.m.

Farmington firefighters also responded to the accident. 

The cars, heavily damaged at the front ends, were both towed soon before the roads reopened.

Update, 4:40 p.m., Oct. 14

Life Star airlifted an 8-year-old boy to Hartford Hospital after a white sedan and the van his family was in collided.   

Two women, one from each car, in critical condition and were taken to the UConn Health Center. The adult male in the white sedan has serious injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Ambulances took two other children in the van, on 4 and the other 6, to St. Francis. 

Police re-opened Route 6 around 4:44 p.m. after the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad surveyed the scene.

Officers tested the speed a car would have to be going to make a car skid a certain distance. 

The accident is still under investigation. 

Update, 4:05 p.m., Oct. 14

After the two-car crash on Route 6 at Hyde Road, two adult women, one from each car, are in life-threatening condition.

The 8-year-old boy airlifted by Life Star is being treated in Hartford Hospital. An adult male has serious injuries and two other children were also injured.

Life Star airlifted an 8-year-old boy Monday after a two-car crash on Route 6 12:30 p.m. near Hyde Road

"We have two adult females who are critical, life threatening injuries. We have an adult male whose injuries are pretty devastating," Lt. Colin Ryan, public information officer for the Farmington Police Department said just after 3 p.m. "The 8-year-old boy who was Life Starred, we're hoping for a good outcome there, but obviously his injuries were bad enough that he had to be flown."

The 8-year-old who was airlifted was taken to Hartford Hospital, but police have not released the hospitals the others were taken to at this time. 

Two other children were also injured and transported to area hospitals. 

Everyone in the two cars that crashed on Route 6 near Hyde Road Monday was taken to area hospitals, Ryan said. Four were in the burgundy van and two were in the white sedan.

"Pretty early on, the first responders realized how severe the accident was and called for multiple Life Stars," Ryan said. 

A second Life Star helicopter initially called was canceled due to its distance from the crash site, Ryan said.

The Courant reported Monday afternoon that three individuals were extricated, but Patch has not confirmed that at this time. Ryan said that all parties were out of the vehicles when he arrived to the scene. 

Update, 3:02 p.m.

Six people are injured after a collision between a burgundy mini van and a white sedan at the intersection of Route 6 and Hyde Road at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Life Star airlifted an eight-year-old boy to Hartford Hospital.

The front of both vehicles were heavily damaged. Both cars were still on site just after 3 p.m. as the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad investigated the circumstances of the crash.

Police have not released details on the cause of the crash at this time because the investigation of the accident is ongoing.

Route 6 is closed between New Britain Avenue and Colt Highway due to a motor vehicle crash just after 1 p.m.

Farmington police are on scene.

The Hartford Courant reported that five people were injured in the accident and that Farmington firefighters extricated three of the individuals from one car, but Patch has not confirmed that at this time.
