Young Man Faces Statutory Rape Charge After Alleged Sex at Mall

New Britain man charged with sex assault, public indecency.

An 18-year-old from New Britain is facing felony charges after allegedly having sex with his underage girlfriend at the Westfarms mall.

According to Sgt. Patrick Buckley, Raymond Anthony Cancel had consensual sex with his girlfriend, who is 14 years old, in a bathroom at the mall in Farmington. Her parents found out, Buckley said, and made the complaint to police.

Cancel was charged with public indecency, risk of injury to a minor and second-degree sexual assault.

Connecticut law defines statutory rape as sexual contact between two people when one is under 16 years old and the difference in age is greater than two years.

Police said Cancel had no previous criminal history.

He was released on $10,000 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear in court Jan. 22.
