Connecticut Leaders React to Obama Speech

Gov. Dannel Malloy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal note Obama's Newtown reference in the president's second inaugural address.

Connecticut's top leaders were in Washington D.C. on Monday for President Obama's second inauguration and commented on the Newtown reference in the president's speech.

"I was struck particularly with the reference to Newtown as a symbol of how America needs to do better,” Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal told the blog Capitol Watch.

The reference came toward the end of his speech as Obama laid out his broad vision for America in the next four years.

"Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for and cherished and always safe from harm," Obama said.

Gov. Dannel Malloy was in the nation's capitol for the inauguration and told Capitol Watch he was also struck by the impact the shootings in Newtown have had on the country and on policy makers.

“It is amazing how different Newtown is and how profoundly Newtown has impacted the country,” Malloy said.

A true Progressive / Socialist / Communist take your label of choice or are you a member of the "No Labels" crowd? With you folks it is always the "collective good" [as defined and managed by you and like-minded educated elites] over individual liberty. Thank you no thank you! Government can not protect you! Fact. They protect the collective but not the individual. When a criminal breaks into your house, robs you at the point of a knife, or tries to rape your daughter GOVERNEMENT CAN NOT PROTECT YOU - the individual. You are responsible for your own security and with luck and training within the the law that of your family and neighbors. Collective reduction in crime means NOTHING when it is your wife and daughter being raped, robbed, murdered / burned alive. If it happens, you are an individual sacrifice to the common good - collateral damage! Still looking for the courage of your convictions? What is you real full name? It would be go to know if you are a neighbor so I will not count on your help? You wait for the government and falling crime [why are we doing "something" about guns if crime if falling?] & me and like-minded liberty loving citizens of CT will continue to exercise our rights under Section 15 of the state constitution! Deal with the fact that "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" has a meaning in law and it is the law! Amend the Constitution [both state and federal] and until then keep your executive orders, we are still a constitutional republic Comrade Controller!

@Paul. 1. I am a member of the "'no labels" crowd though I generally vote Republican so I guess one would call me "center/right." However, I think for myself and my views don't align perfectly with either party or any particular ideology. 2. I'm flattered you refer to me as an "educated elite." I did work hard to obtain my education. However, with respect to the collective good, I think you may be confused. In point #2 above, I clearly refer to the beliefs of gun control advocates, not myself. You should slow down and read exactly what I wrote before responding. 3. Yes, I agree that I am responsible for my own security. That is why I own guns. 4. I disagree with your dismissal of collective reduction in crime. When the crime rate falls, my family is less likely to be a victim of a crime - and that is a good thing. to suggest that a "collective reduction in crime means nothing" is absurd and it ignores the safety gained by living in a place like Canton vs a place like Iraq (to be extreme). 5. I don't give my full name on here - too many crazy people who would accuse me of being things I'm not (see your earlier post). And no, you couldn't count on my help - as you said before, "you are responsible for your own security."

@Wyatt - - awesome! At least you weren't called a Marxist....(that might be in the next post)

Wyatt demonstrably no code, no honor, no courage. Continue to hide behind your anonymous posts as is your right but your cause suffers. Failure to stand behind your opinion with your identity reduces you to at best "paid troll” status & at worst a “give everyone a trophy coward”! Neither option deserves continued attention! Mr Gibson for you I simply offer that Marxist are as Marxist do! And to be fair and balanced, Fascist are as Fascist do! Every Marxist or Fascist regime in recorded history has disarmed its population and then perpetrated mass murder on select segments of that population [even in USA we have failed - the Trail of Tears, Wounded Knee, Manzanar]. But I know that the greatest, most prosperous, & freest nation for the last 224 odd years has guaranteed the right of its citizens to keep & bear arms for protection of life & property, defense of the state, and resistance against a tyrannical government. Sometimes having the ability precludes the need to use it! Liberty is as Liberty does! I am a citizen and not a subject. Governor Mao Loy and our Glorious Leader BHO do not rule. They govern as a co equal branches of a government deriving its just powers from the consent of the governed, stop the executive orders, selective enforcement, & prosecutorial discretion based on political ideology. The US Constitution clearly states "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED". Deal with it or change it lawfully in Constitutional Convention! So end my participation in this thread.

@Paul. A few more thoughts. 1. Please refrain from using the terms Marxist and Facist. You clearly have little understanding of their meaning and applying them to any idea you disagree with is simply a cover to avoid any thoughtful conversation. It's embarrassing. 2. Similarly, your references to the Governor and President are childish. Adults can disagree on topics and have a conversation about them. Name-calling is not very mature of you. 3. You should learn that someone who disagrees with you is not your enemy. Your writing suggests that you feel under siege of some sort, which is unfortunate. I hope you realize that no one is our to get you, there is no tyrannical government and no one thinks you are a subject. Breath deep and get some fresh air - it may do you good.
