Farmington Town Council Approves Purchase of Mountain Road Property

This purchase will allow the town to relocate the New England Scenic Trail.

The Farmington Town Council unanimously backed the purchase of a long considered piece of open space at 70 Mountain Rd. at its meeting on Tuesday night.

The vote, authorizing Town Manager Kathleen Eagen to enter into a land acquisition agreement with the owner, is the "last step" in the process, Eagen said. The property, owned by Alden Realty, LLC and Joseph Zaleski, will cost the town about $25,000 per acre, roughly $310,000 in total.

The property connects existing town open space and the Hill-Stead Museum. Purchasing the land will also allow the town to relocate a portion of the New England Scenic Trail there from Poplar Hills Drive.

“This is by far the large piece of the jigsaw puzzle that has been missing," Elizabeth Dolphin, Farmington's assistant town planner, said.

Commentary from the council members and town officials was overwhelmingly positive. Town Council Chairman Jeffrey Hogan said that he's hiked the Metacomet Trail up to New Hampshire and spoke highly of the property.

"I love this piece of property," he said. “I think this is one of the best pieces of open space that we’ve acquired in many, many years."
