P & Z Approves Propane Cylinder Exchange and Steel Buildings

The Plan and Zoning Commission met Monday evening for its regularly scheduled meeting at Town Hall. The commission approved the applications for the installation of switchable propane cylinders and a change in materials for the construction of new storage buildings on New Britain Avenue.

The Mobil of Farmington station located at 244 Farmington Avenue will be the site of the propane exchange station. Dave Smith, representing Mighty Flame Propane said Jersey barriers would be installed to protect the propane cylinder cabinet. The aluminum container will hold up to 36 cylinders and has dimensions of 89" wide by 65" tall by 29" deep. The application was approved unanimously with the provision that the smaller of the proposed signs on the aluminum enclosure be installed.

Lance Violet the applicant for a request for change of materials on a previously approved new construction of structures at A-1 Self-Storage at 1400 New Britain Avenue addressed the commission. His application requested a change in the building materials from masonry to steel construction on two storage buildings for the business. Responding to an inquiry about the color scheme of the steel structures, Violet said, "I've got a color chart here, whatever color you people want, I'll use."

Commissioners approved the application unanimously with an amended motion that the building be "antique red" with the roof colored "light stone."

After addressing the commission, John Parrinello of the Glastonbury office of the Gilbane Company withdrew the company's application for a proposed used of a temporary parking lot located on Batterson Park Road. With concerns raised about access, traffic, and impact on residential neighbors by commissioners, and comments by Parrinello saying the location was probably not as ideal as other possibilities including a lot at Tilcon, all agreed the application should be withdrawn and no action was required of the commission.

An informal presentation by Northeast Tower about the sight impact of a possible training tower on the property located at 199 Brickyard Road was withdrawn by the applicant.

Longtime Town Planner Jeffrey Ollendorf publicly announced to commissioners of his intent to retire from his position in June.
