Rep. Wadsworth Named Farmington Land Trust's First Citizen of the Year

Award to be presented April 13 at annual meeting.

Farmington State Rep. Bill Wadsworth may be working in Hartford, but here in town his name continues to be synonymous with open space. Now, the lifelong resident and former Town Council member has been named Farmington Land Trust Citizen of the Year, as the award’s first recipient. Wadsworth will be presented with the award at the Land Trust’s annual meeting April 13 at .

The Farmington Land Trust created the award to honor individuals who have given outstanding service to the organization and exemplifies its mission and goals.

Wadsworth has been a member of the land trust for many years and serves as a steward for the William S. Wadsworth Memorial parcel. He chaired the Town Land Acquisition Committee, and is credited with leading the town to acquire more than 758 acres of property for open space, including the Fisher, Hein and Krell farms, and riverfront parcels.

“As a lifelong Farmington resident, I have always made the environment and open space preservation a priority. Growing up on a farm gave me an early and deep appreciation of our environment and the need to protect it. I am honored and humbled that the Farmington Land Trust has chosen me as the Citizen of the Year."

In Hartford, Wadsworth has introduced several bills, including one aimed at promoting open space.

“I am continuing my efforts for land preservation and protection as State Representative for the 21st District by being a co-introducer of House Bill 5254, which would include municipalities, quasi-public agencies and certain special districts as owners of land entitled to immunity under the Recreational Land Use Act,” said Wadsworth. “I am also working with Elizabeth Dolphin of the Town of Farmington to include a piece of state property located in the Town of Farmington in the conveyance bill for this session.”

The Farmington Land Trust’s mission includes acquiring open space in Farmington, promoting biological diversity and wildlife, and educating the public, government and business community about the importance of open space and advocating for policies that ensure long-term protection of Farmington’s natural resources.
