Turnout Light for Budget Referendum

Budget will pass automatically if less than 15% of eligible voters turn out.

About halfway through the voting on Thursday's budget referendum, about 6 percent of Farmington voters had cast their ballots, according to election moderator Robert Bonato.

Bonato, who was at the polling station at the Farmington Library, said he expected about a 12 percent turnout by the time polls close at 8 p.m.

If the turnout is under 15 percent, Bonato said, the referendum automatically passes.

"It passes no matter what the vote is," Bonato said.

Bonato speculated that the beautiful spring weather plus a lack of opposition to the budget and bonding questions were responsible for the light turnout.
