Athlete of the Week: 200 Free Relay Team

On Saturday, January 25, Porter’s swimmers traveled to compete against Kent. It was along bus ride in the snow. When the girls were warming up, Coach Katie Riccobon told them make something happen today, go break the 200 Freestyle Relay Pool Record.

The current Kent Pool Record for the 200 Free Relay was set in 2010 by a Porter’s Relay team that consisted of Mallory Brown, Nicollette Oudkerk, Ester Menhez and Cooper Kerans with a time of 1:44.54.

On Saturday, Kent’s relay team was over 6 seconds behind, but this did not stop Porter’s mission to break the current record. With no competition around, the relay team of Celeste Salopek, Ella Cowan de Wolf, Christina Guertin and Sydni Johnson broke the 4-year-old Kent pool record with a time of 1:44.37.

It was so great to see the entire Porter’s team come together to cheer on their teammates. The swimmers, parents and coaches were ecstatic on the deck and in the stands. The record was broken due to this group of swimmers hard work in and out of the pool. This will be the first of many record to be broken! This weeks athletes of the week are Celeste Salopek, Ella Cowan de Wolf, Christina Guertin and Sydni Johnson.
