Nutritionist Treat List for Halloween

by Salud Integrative Medicine

If you haven't already bought your treats to hand out this Halloween, good news -- we've done a bit of homework and can help you make sensible (and fun!) choices. Prompted by an article about sweets that include food coloring and another blogger's post about GMO's in candies, Dr. Kara Burkhart (naturopath and busy mom) and Pauline Weissman, M.S., C.N.S. thought it would be fun to share some favorite, tried-and-true, kid-endorsed, Halloween Hand-outs (below).

Like Pauline Weissman notes, "Halloween and nutrition — they don't seem to go hand in hand!" But the nutritionist and mother of four admits it's about so much more than the treats. "I absolutely love Halloween. It is just so much fun to dress up, be someone else for the night, and wander the neighborhood with my kids, all who are beyond excited to show off their costumes, see what their friends and neighbors are for the evening, run around in the dark (which they never do), say hi to everyone on the street all at once, and whoa!!...get some surprise treats while they are at it. What isn’t there to love?"

Suggestions for your goodie tray:

    •    clementines — you can decorate them with fun/scary faces since they'll be peeled
    •    stickers — present them on a tray covered with black construction paper so they'll pop out
    •    pencils — try the dollar store for great buys
    •    small containers of play-do — use a snack size ziplock and be sure to include a note that the item is Not Edible. Look for fun plastic stamps to go along with the treat
    •    pretzels — you can find all-grain pretzels
    •    sugar free lollipops — available at most grocery or specialty stores
    •    plastic spiders — add them to the treat tray for a fun surprise
    •    non-GMO kettle corn or non-GMO Halloween themed cinnamon sugar corn
    •    "fake" fingers including the nails! (Try this recipe)
