Q&A: Your Body and Toxins

By Dr. Emma Norton, ND
Salud Integrative Medicine

Q: What is a toxin?

Our bodies are exposed to toxins in food, drinking water and even the air we breathe.

Q: How do our bodies normally process toxins?

A healthy body has healthy routes of elimination that eliminate toxins and waste through breathing, urine and bowels, sweating and even our nervous system (thoughts/emotions). These routes of elimination are called emunctories.

Q: What happens if our bodies don’t function properly?

The body can become overwhelmed with a toxic burden if there is over-exposure or the healthy routes of elimination are not in good working order. This overexposure to toxins and/or poor elimination allows toxins to build up in the tissues.

Q: What health problems can result from a toxin overload?

Health problems related to toxic overload include fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal problems, insomnia, anxiety, depression and high blood pressure. Additional health problems can affect the skin (as rashes/eczema), the muscles and joints (as arthritis), and other mucous membranes in the respiratory system (sinusitis) as well as the male/female reproductive tract.

Q: How can we correct a toxin issue in our bodies?

Biotherapeutic Drainage is a safe and natural process to remove toxins from the cell and facilitate elimination through one of the five primary emunctories, thus restoring normal cell and tissue function.

Q: How is Biotherapeutic Drainage managed?

The drainage process begins with some basic guidelines that will contribute to the enhancement of toxin elimination including adequate rest, water, exercise, digestive aids, stress management, castor oil, essential fats, fiber, deep breathing, and dry skin brushing.
