Vitamin D: Need-to-Know Info

If I use sunscreen or wear protective clothing will my body still make the Vitamin D it needs?

No. Your skin needs direct exposure to the UV B rays from the sun to make Vitamin D.

What length of sun exposure do I need in order to make the vitamin D?

The amount of direct sunlight required for your body to make the amount of Vitamin D to keep you from becoming deficient depends on the time of year, time of day, location and the degree of pigment in your skin. A general rule is to expose yourself for half the amount of time it takes for your skin to turn red. Time varies for as little as 15 minutes for someone with fair skin to several hours for someone with darker skin. The amount of vitamin D made will depend also on the size of the area exposed. Exposing a larger area, like your back will create more Vitamin D than exposing a smaller area like your arm.

Does the age of a person determine how much natural vitamin D (from sun) one should get? For example, do children need it as much as adults?

Babies should be kept out of the sun and given a Vitamin D supplement to protect their sensitive skin. In older children follow the guidelines for adults, exposing them to half the time it takes them to burn and then cover them up, with clothing, shade or sunscreen.

What properties does vitamin D have that are good for me?

The scientific research on the benefits of Vitamin D is exploding. Vitamin D has been shown to help with regulation of blood sugar, important for not only diabetics but those trying to maintain a healthy weight and good energy level. Most people know that it is good for our bones due to the fact that it helps increase the intestines absorption of calcium and prevent its loss through the kidneys. It has also been shown to help prevent cancer, heart disease and boost the immune system.

Can I get Vitamin D in my diet?

Trace amounts of can be found in egg yolk and butter. Many foods today have been fortified with Vitamin D because it is not readily available in the diet.

What levels of Vitamin D are optimal?

First, your doctor should order 25-Vit D3 to adequately assess your body’s levels. You will hear different things on the ideal level depending on your source. I usually look for a level of about 50ng/mL, but depending on the patient and their individual health situation I may want use a range of 40-60ng/mL.
