WHO:             More than 200 Connecticut high school students from across the State

On Thursday, May 24 in Farmington, more than 200 high school students will be competing head-to-head in the field to test their knowledge of five areas of environmental science:  Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, and this year's current issue, Low Impact Development.  Come see students classifying fish specimens, identifying soil layers in a pre-dug soil pit, analyzing animal tracks, and measuring the size of trees in the forest! The teams will also give oral presentations promoting solutions to theoretical non-point source pollution issues.

The mission of the Connecticut Envirothon is to promote environmental awareness and knowledge, while enhancing personal stewardship among Connecticut high school students through education and team competition.  The competing teams have attended training workshops during the academic year where they work side-by-side with environmental professionals learning the skills of the trade.  These same professionals work on designing the exams the student teams must complete at the event.

Specific objectives of the Envirothon program include fostering increased acceptance of an environmental studies curriculum in high schools, encouraging students to view scientific fields as viable career paths, developing students' critical thinking and decision-making skills, and presenting balanced options for management of our natural resources.
