Local Police, SWAT Team to Practice at Tunxis Thursday

Exercise is part of routine emergency training.

Local police departments part of the North Central Emergency Services team will be conducting training exercises on the Tunxis Community College campus between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday. The regional group acts as a SWAT team in emergency and hostage situations.

Snipers may be posted as part of the exercise, which will include Tunxis students, faculty and staff, but no live ammunition will be used. Signs will be posted around campus to advise observers the event is just an exercise. No classes will be in session.

The North Central Emergency Services team is made up of Farmington, Canton, Simsbury, Windsor, Windsor Locks, Granby, Suffield, Bloomfield and Avon Police Departments. The group will be taking part in the exercise, which is a routine part of emergency training, Farmington Police Lt. William Tyler said.

Tyler said the group train every six weeks at available locations to practice hostage negotiations, which usually include role players in a hostage scenario.
