PTO Golf Tournament a Success

Despite rain, supporters had a great time while helping to raise funds for schools.

Supporters of Noah Wallace, West District, East Farms, and Union Elementary Schools' PTOs enthusiastically played in the Eagle Open Golf Tournament at Tunxis Plantation Golf Course Monday as if the sun was shining. The event brought together all four Farmington elementary schools to raise money for extras not provided for in the regular school budget such as updating computers and advancing technology equipment, teacher supplies, guest authors, student enrichment programs, recreation equipment and charity programs.

The tournament was started 10 years ago by a group of Union School PTO Dads and eight years ago it was expanded to include all four schools. This year’s event raised nearly $27,000.

For the second year, the tournament was hosted by Dr. Baliram Maraj of Valley Orthodontics. “I have kids in the Farmington schools and I am happy to support the program,” he said.

Despite the all-day rain, the 140 players seemed happy to be there as well.

“Everyone had a blast,” said one of the event organizers, Jamie Martin, at the end of the day as he collected score cards. “This is the most players we have had in the history of the tournament.”

Josh Martin was helping his dad as cart after cart pulled in. “I think it’s really helpful that we’re raising money for new computers,” he said.

Carrie Nagel and Julie Hennig were among the 12 women players.

“Last year we organized, but this year we golfed. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year. It was fun and it’s for a great cause,” Hennig said.

Law partners Aaron Jainchill and Bill Beckert agreed.

“Our law firm is new and we want to convey our willingness to invest in the community. Both of us have children in the Farmington schools and so we thought this would be a good way to show our support,” said Beckert, who also serves on the Board of Education.
